A true southern boy from Crawford, Alabama, Derek moved to Aspen in June of 1991 not long after earning an accounting degree from Troy University. “I immediately fell in love with this place,” he says, “and after more than two decades, I can tell you, the beauty of the this incredible area never gets old.” Derek has a passion for worship, family, music, biking, “reading with our kids at night” and equipping others to lead lives that glorify God. He points out that part of his calling to lead in the church revolves around his deep desire to remind people that God is accessible. “God can be known and wants to know us, he’s not scary, he’s a friend,” pausing, “with a lot of power.” His eyes widen with that statement.
Prior to coming on staff in 2003 as a part of the pastoral team, he and his wife Jennifer served as Young Life leaders for six years. Derek also spends some of his energies playing music outside the walls of the church with the Derek Brown Band. “We want to bring the joy of the Lord to everyone we play for, in or out of the church.” When asked, what’s your favorite thing about Crossroads Church, Derek says, “These people are real. You can just feel that. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that we have a B-3 organ.”
Derek and Jennifer, have three children and enjoy doing “anything together.” One of their favorite family traditions is attending orchestra concerts at the Aspen Music Festival in the summer.
